Commentary | ".... who begged the curate to allow his master to leave the cage for a little,...".
Sancho asks the priest to allow don Quixote to leave the cage; the knight is "enchanted" into a cage on an ox cart (on the right with the carter). Also in the scene, the canon of Toledo, the barber and the officers of the Holy Brotherhood resting and talking aside. Remarkable figures and well-resolved scene with different actions. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes and details. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
