Commentary | "While this was going on, Sancho, perceiving that he could speak to his master without having the curate and the barber present all the time,...".
Sancho begins to talk with don Quixote about his "enchantment"; the knight travels tied into a cage on an ox cart, led by a carter and escorted by two officers of the Holy Brotherhood; Rocinante follows them. At certain distance, the barber, the priest and the canon of Toledo. Very remarkable group of figures and excellent composition. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes and details. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
