Commentary | "Who soon came up with them...".
The priest and the barber, following at certain distance the ox cart with don Quixote, the officers of the Holy Brotherhood and Sancho, encounter a canon from Toledo. Remarkable figures (notice their gestures, resolved with great naturalism) and composition, placing all the figures with their backs to the viewer. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
