Commentary | "The innkeeper then came to the priest, and put into his hands a bundle of papers,...".
The innkeeper gives the novels of El Curioso Impertinente and Rinconete y Cortadillo to the priest before leaving; beside them, Sancho taking Rocinante by the bridle. In the background, don Quixote "enchanted" into a cage on an ox cart, the innkeeper's wife and her daughter, doña Clara, Dorotea, Luscinda, Zoraida, don Fernando, his companions, the barber.... all bidding farewell each other. Remarkable figures, with good gestures, and notable composition. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
