Commentary ".... but, before the equipage moved forward, the hostess, her daughter, and Maritornes came out...".
The innkeeper's wife, her daughter and Maritornes pretend to be afflicted when don Quixote, "enchanted" into a cage on an ox cart, is ready to leave the inn.
Also in the scene, Sancho taking Rocinante by the bridle, don Fernando and his companions, the officers of the Holy Brotherhood (all on horseback), the barber on his mule and others.
Very remarkable variety of figures and gestures.
Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details.
Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects.
Notes 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism.
