Commentary | ".... the priest went for Sancho, who came in with much humility, and, on his knees...".
By order of the priest, Sancho kneels before don Quixote and asks for his forgiveness after having said that Micomicona (Dorotea) is not a real princess. Also in the scene, Zoraida, don Fernando, one of his companions, the judge don Juan, doña Clara, Luscinda, Cardenio and the captive (Ruy Pérez de Viedma); also the innkeeper's wife (or daughter) peeping from the background. Remarkable figures, with good gestures. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
