Commentary | "How great was the indignation of Don Quixote, on hearing his squire speak in terms so disrespectful!".
Don Quixote gets angry with Sancho when the squire, once more, tells that Micomicona (Dorotea) is not a real princess. Also in the scene, Zoraida (partially), one of don Fernando's companions, the judge don Juan, don Fernando, doña Clara, Luscinda, Cardenio, the captive (Ruy Pérez de Viedma), the barber and the priest. Remarkable figures with good gestures, speacially don Quixote and Sancho. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
