Commentary | ".... accordingly, he approached the princess, and threw himself himself upon his knees before her,...".
Don Quixote, knelt before princess Micomicona (Dorotea), asks her to pursue their journey to achieve his adventure. Also in the scene, Sancho, don Fernando, doña Clara, Luscinda, the judge don Juan, the captive (Ruy Pérez de Viedma), the barber and the priest. Remarkable figures with good gestures; notable composition too. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
