Commentary | "To which the youth, pressing both his hands, as if some great affliction was wringing his heart,...".
Don Luis confesses the judge don Juan de Viedma that he is in love with his daughter, doña Clara, and that he wants to marry her. Remarkable figures, with good gestures. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details; notice the groom in the background. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
