Commentary | ".... but call hither my squire Sancho; for to him this defence and revenge most properly belongs".
The innkeeper's wife and her daughter asks don Quixote to help their husband/father (in the background, beaten by two guests), but don Quixote refuses to do it claiming that it is a proper task for Sancho. Remarkable figures, with good gestures. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
