Commentary "A short time before daybreak, a voice reached the ears of the ladies, so sweet and melodions,...".
Different scenes about doña Ana and don Luis' story: don Luis, dressed as a groom, singing a love song for doña Ana at the inn stable; doña Ana covers her ears because she does not want to hear the song and Dorotea embraces her; don Luis declaring his love to doña Ana from his window; and don Luis, in groom clothes, following doña Ana and his father to the inn.
Remarkable and carefully-done narrative composition.
Good variety of figures.
Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details.
Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects.
Notes 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism.
2 - The illustration includes the reference "CAP. XLII. - 3.", but don Luis and doña Ana's story is told in chapter 43:1.
