Commentary | ".... and he thus addressed them: «your worship may securely enter and range this castle,....»".
Don Quixote welcomes the judge Juan Pérez de Viedma and his daughter, doña Clara, to the castle (inn). In the background, Luscinda, Zoraida, Dorotea, don Fernando, the priest and others. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details; remarkable composition and setting. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects; notice the contrasts produced by the candle held by the innkeeper's wife in the background.. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
