Commentary "Verily, gentlemen, if it be well considered,...".
Don Quixote begins his speech about arms and letters; listening to him, Sancho, Dorotea, Luscinda, don Fernando, Cardenio, the captive...
Above them, some scenes from don Quixote's speech: a man entering the gate of this castle (inn) at this moment and recognizing princess Micomicona and don Quixote; those who assert that letters have the preeminence over arms running away; a soldier training his body and his intelligence, planing the defence of a city under his care; reference to the importance of peace (angels announcing "gloria sea en las alturas y paz en la tierra [a los hombres] de buena voluntad"; the student suffering from poverty, hunger and cold, studying hard, stumbling here, falling there.... but, finally, he achieves to rule the world from a chair.
Remarkable, original and carefully-done narrative composition.
Notable variety of figures, with good gestures and expressions.
Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow with impressionist effects.
Notes 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project.
