Commentary ".... they all sat down at a long table...".
Don Quixote at the head of the table; at his right, Sancho, Dorotea, Luscinda, Zoraida, the priest and the barber; and at his left, don Fernando, Cardenio, the captive (Ruy Pérez de Viedma) and don Fernando's companions.
Also in the scene the innkeeper's wife (or Maritornes).
Very remarkable composition, totally accurate to Cervantes' text; remarkable variety of figures, with different gestures and expressions.
Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes, setting and details.
Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow with impressionist effects.
Notes 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project.
