Commentary ".... to lean his elbow on the arm of the chair and his cheek upon his hand and, asking Camilla's pardon...".
Different scenes from the tale "El Curioso Impertinente": Lotario pretends to sleep when Anselmo leaves him alone with Camila; Anselmo finds Lotario sleeping; Anselmo asks Lotario again to help him to prove Camila's fidelity; Anselmo, hidden, observes Lotario and Camila, both alone but without talking; Anselmo tells Lotario that he has discovered his trick and forces him to carry out his plan; Anselmo leaves; Camila welcomes Lotario accompanied by her maidens; Lotario, finally, falls in love with Camila; Camila writes a letter for Anselmo and she sends a servant to take the letter to his husband.
Very remarkable, original and carefully-done narrative composition.
Remarkable variety of figures, expressions and gestures.
Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow with impressionist effects.
Notes 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project.
