Commentary | ".... when I entered the room where he was,....".
Five different scenes about Cardenio's life as told by himself to don Quixote, Sancho and the goatherd in Sierra Morena: Cardenio finds his father with a letter; Cardenio reading the letter; Cardenio's father tells him that the Duque Ricardo wants him to be companion of his eldest son; Cardenio speaking one night with Luscinda before leaving; and Cardenio with the Duke Ricardo and his sons. Original and remarkable narrative composition. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes and details. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow with impressionist effects. |
Notes | 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project. |
