Commentary | "«.... Well then, señor, returned Sancho, I say that for some days past....» Thou speakest not amiss, Sancho,....»".
In the lower half of the illustration, the reality: don Quixote, mounted on Rocinante, and Sancho, on his donkey, talking about adventures and chivalry; notice their gestures (dialogue). In the upper half, the scenes described by don Quixote to Sancho: a famous knight arrives to a city and he is surrounded by children; the king orders his knights to go to welcome the knight; the king himself welcomes the knight at the stairs and embraces him; the king leads the knight to meet the queen and the princess; and the knight dining with the king, queen and princess. Remarkable illustration with a perfectly-resolved and carefully-done narrative composition. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow with impressionist effects. |
Notes | 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project. |
