Commentary | "... and going up to him, placed the point of his spear to his throat, commanding him to surrender,".
Don Quixote, mounted on Rocinante, orders Alonso López to surrender; the ecclesiastic remains fallen on the ground with his mule beside a torch. Very remarkable figures. In the background (right), other ecclesiastics running away. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow contrasts. |
Notes | 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project.
2 - "... serie de originalísimos dibujos, en los que Aranda dió muestra de su imaginación. [...] El aspecto fantástico y un tanto pavoroso de tal aventura, el número, confusión y diversidad de hombres y de caballos, y, sobre todo, la valentía pictórica con que están dados los efectos de luz, produciendo la sensación del brillo de las flameantes luces en la obscuridad que á veces, por estar caídos los hachones, alumbran á las figuras de abajo á arriba, avalora notablemente estos dibujos" (José Ramón Mélida: “Don José Jiménez Aranda y su "Quijote"", vol.
