Commentary | "The mule was timid, and started so much upon his touching the bridle, that... she threw her rider over the crupper to the ground...".
One of the ecclesiastics (Alonso López) falls from his mule on the ground when don Quixote seizes it by the briddle; other ecclesiastics on horseback and holding lighted tapers observe the scene. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes and details; realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable night representation with the contrast of the lighted tapers. |
Notes | 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project.
