Commentary | "«That Knight whom thou seest yonder in yellow armour.... that one in armour with flowers of gold....»".
Some of the knights as described by don Quixote: Laurcalco, Micocolembo (with three crowns on his shield), Brandabarbarán of Boliche (with a gate for shield), Timonel of Carcajona (with a cat on his shield and "MIAU")... Jiménez Aranda paints in the same army knights that in Cervantes' text appear in each different army. Remarkable illustration; good imaginative style in comparisson with the main picturesque/realistic style of the whole edition. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow with impressionist effects. |
Notes | 1 – Reproduction of the original sketch (Chinese ink and gouache white). Jiménez Aranda meant to paint a more-finished drawing after this sketch using natural sceneries and real models, but he died before completing the project. |
