Commentary | "... and then, with his own sword, a smart slap on the shoulder,...".
At the inn courtyard, don Quixote, knelt, is knighted by the innkeeper, who holds a book and a sword; observing the scene, a young groom (holding a candle), the two party girls (doña Molinera and doña Tolosa) and some muleteers. Well-known scene and composition. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period setting, clothes and details; realistic and picturesque. Jiménez Aranda's drawing skill is masterly; remarkable use of light and shadow; notice the light effects of the full moon and the candle. |
Notes | 1 - The original drawing (Chinese ink and gouache white) was finished in 1899 in Sevilla and presented at the National Exposition of Madrid (1899).
