| Commentary | In the foreground, Altisidora lying "dead" on a catafalque, with a palm branch and lighted by several wax tapers; a young boy "vestido a lo Romano" playing the harp; don Quixote contemplating the "corpse"; Sancho Panza dressing a capirote with devils and a tunic with flames; "mirábase Sancho de arriba a abajo veíase ardiendo en llamas, pero como no le quemaban, no los estimaba en dos ardites" (69:2).
In the background, Minos, Rhadamanthus (both as kings), the Duke and the Duchess surrounded by servants. Highly-theatrical and dramatic composition; accurate to Cervantes' text in all its details. The figures of Altisidora and the harp player are of great beauty; don Quixote's figure has great force. Excellent illustration. |
