Commentary | In Barataria Island, Sancho is not allowed to eat by Pedro Recio, who orders the servants to take away the dishes.
Since its representation by Coypel (Paris: Surugue, 1724), this scene is habitual in 18th century editions. Now, the composition is quite different; more austere setting (clothes, architectures...)and less artificial. On the right, a numerous group (Sancho, servants, the steward and the secretary). On the left, just Pedro Recio (framed by and arch). Drawing and engraving are excellent; very remarkable large size figures. |
