Commentary | First representation of don Quixote's death in Spain.
Don Quixote dead in his bed surrounded by the housekeeper, the niece, Sancho, Sansón Carrasco, the barber, the priest (taking don Quixote's pulse) and even the greyhound. Iconography of a Christian and sane death: candles, will, quills and inkwell, crucifix, painting with the Holy Family, benditera and escapularios. The niece, crying over the housekeeper, is excellently-drawn and engraved. |
Notes | 1 - Plate newly-engraved by A. Blanco with light changes after the illus. in Madrid: Ibarra, 1782. |
