Commentary | Allegorical scene of great beauty.
In a room, don Quixote, asleep, is protected by Wisdom (as Athena among shining clouds); his arms and barber basin remain abandoned. On the right, Sancho, awake, is captivated by Folly (with a jester scepter among dark clouds), who shows him a crown and a castle (the promised government of the island). |
Notes | 1 - Turned copy after Coypel’s illustration (Paris: Surugue, c. 1728-30).
2 - Wrongly-placed in Chapter XIX, Part II, Volume IV (60:2); as its own indication refers, it should be f.p. 253 in Chapter XXXIII, Part II, Volume IV (74:2). |
