Commentary | speaks to the Duchess, who rides a white horse and holds a goshawk (accurate to Cervantes' text), and points to don Quixote introducing him.
Don Quixote's figure, in the background, is bad. Just one maiden accompanies the Duchess; in other illustrations, her retinue is larger. This gallant scene, with not many changes, will be habitual in 18th and 19th centuries editions. Drawing with some disproportions (between the Duchess and her horse, for example) and some gestures are artificial (maiden), but good as a whole. |
Notes | 1 - Same plate first engraved for London: Knaplock, 1725; turned copy after Coypel’s illustration engraved by Surugue (Paris: Surugue, 1723).
2 - In 1731 edition, volume III is in tome II; in 1725, there were four tomes. |
