Commentary | Don Quixote and Rocinante are hit by the windmill sail, his lance broken and Rocinante thrown onto the ground upside down.
From the background, Sancho observes the scene astonished mounted on his donkey. Masterly drawing; the movement and violence of the action has been perfectly-resolved; the figures of don Quixote and Rocinante are masterly, notice their well-resolved foreshortenings and don Quixote's expression; also Sancho is very remarkable. |
Notes | 1 - Glyphographic copy by Taylor & Wass after the original plate designed and etched by Schrödter first appeared in an illustrated wrapper in Altona/Leipzig: G. Mayer (printed in Leipzig by G. Kreysing), 1863.
2 - Glyphography: A process similar to etching, in which, by means of voltaic electricity, a raised copy of a drawing is made, so that it can be used to print from. |
