Commentary | Don Quixote during the vigil of his arms at the inn courtyard; accurate to Cervantes' place, the arms and armour (spurs, breast, gauntlets, arms, shield, helmet, sword...) have been placed on a water trough.
Don Quixote's figure, extremely slim and elongated (almost disproportionate), is very remarkable; notice his expression, almost cadaverous. In the background, the muleteer appears holding a lamp. Masterly drawing and excellent shading (moon light); very remarkable and well-detailed setting too. |
Notes | 1 - Glyphographic copy by Taylor & Wass after the original plate designed and etched by Schrödter first appeared in an illustrated wrapper in Altona/Leipzig: G. Mayer (printed in Leipzig by G. Kreysing), 1863.
2 - Glyphography: A process similar to etching, in which, by means of voltaic electricity, a raised copy of a drawing is made, so that it can be used to print from. |
