Commentary | Original illustrated title page with the portraits in profile of don Quixote (reading and wearing spectacles) and Sancho (peeling a piece of fruit); also the heads of Rocinante with Mambrino's helmet (basin barber) and the donkey with Sancho's cap.
Good drawing and engraving; both portraits, very expressive, are really remarkable. |
Notes | 1 - Unsigned title page; Ashbee attributes it to Kenny Meadows.
2 - Despite the reference "with illustrations by Kenny Meadows & John Gilbert", this edition does not have illustrations by John Gilbert, but by Kenny Meadows, Tony Johannot and Adolf Schrödter. 3 - Johannot's illustrations have been mistaken with Gilbert's because they appeared together in London: Bohn, 1842 edition (and 1847). |
