Commentary | This gallant scene, with not many changes, will be habitual in 18th and 19th centuries editions.
Sancho speaks to the Duchess, who rides a white horse and holds a goshawk (accurate to Cervantes' text), and points to don Quixote. Don Quixote's figure, in the background, is bad. Just one maiden acompanies the Duchess; in other illustrations, her retinue is larger. Drawing with some disproportions (between the Duchess and her horse, for example) and some gestures are artificial (maiden), but good as a whole. |
Notes | 1 - This same plate was used for London: Walthoe, 1731.
2 - Turned copy after Coypel’s illustration engraved by Surugue (Paris: Surugue, 1723). |
