Commentary | At first, the illustration can seem lacking in novelty; the scene is well-known since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657). In the foreground, don Quixote appears prepared to fight with the lion while the lionkeeper opens the gate of the cage; in the background, Sancho, don Diego de Miranda and the carter flee away.
However there's an original novelty, accurate to Cervantes' text, that makes the illustration specially comical: the lion with its backs turned on don Quixote; "volvió las espaldas y enseñó sus traseras a don Quijote" (17:2). |
Notes | According to the Index included at the end of the volume, this illustration (Plate V) is rightly placed. |
