| Commentary | At first, the illustration can seem lacking in novelty; the scene is well-known since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657). In the foreground, don Quixote appears prepared to fight with the lion while the lionkeeper opens the gate of the cage; in the background, Sancho, don Diego de Miranda and the carter flee away.
