| Commentary | After the adventure with the actors of the Cortes de la Muerte and before the encounter with the Knight of the Mirrors, Cervantes includes a reference to the friendship between Rocinante and the donkey; "después de cansados y satisfechos cruzaba Rocinante su pescuezo sobre el cuello del rucio, que le sobraba de la otra parte más de media vara, y mirando los dos atentamente al suelo, se solía estar de aquella manera tres días" (12:2).
Tender and anecdotal scene; Sancho observes them while don Quixote appears in the background. |
| Notes | According to the Index included at the end of the volume, this illustration (Plate II) is rightly placed. |
