Commentary | In the foreground, don Quixote and Sancho mounted on Clavileño; two servants simulate its flight with a pair of bellows and one torch.
In the background, before their palace, the Duke and the Duchess observe the scene. Drawing and engraving are quite good; notice the figures in the foreground. |
Notes | 1 – Copy after Clouzier's engraving (Paris: Compagnie des Libraires, 1700) after Savery's illustration for Dordrecht: Savery, 1657 (also in Brussels: Mommarte, 1662 and Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73); the servant lighting Clavileño's fuse has not been copied and some figures (Duke, Duchess, palace) moved. |
