Commentary | Don Quixote "enchanted" into a cage and surrounded by "ghosts" (don Fernando, his companions, don Luis' servants and the innkeeper disguised).
The illustration is masterly; notice don Quixote's figure, sad and crying (detail included by Doré, not Cervantes); this is one of the best representations of the knight. Notice also the point of view chosen by Doré, the viewer is inside the cage, idetified with don Quixote. The faces around don Quixote, as grotesque masks, are very remarkable too. Drawing and engraving are excellent. |
