Commentary | The scene is well-known, but Doré resolved it with certain novelty; don Quixote getting ready to fight with the lion has been placed in the background (not in the foregound as traditionally), and don Diego de Miranda and Sancho in the foreground observing don Quixote from a safety distance (not running away towards the background as in previous editions).
Notice also the lion presenting its hind-quarters to don Quixote (accurate to Cervantes' text); it improves the humor of the scene. |
