Commentary Allegorical scene of great beauty.
In a room, don Quixote, asleep, is protected by Wisdom (as Athena/Minerva among shining clouds); his arms and barber basin remain abandoned.
On the right, Sancho, awake, is captivated by Folly (with a jester scepter among dark clouds), who shows him a crown and a castle (the promised government of the island).
Drawing and engraving are masterly.
Notes 1 - Plate XXXI (in the French edition, the plates aren't numbered).
2 - Illustration dated in 1742.
3 - Copied after Coypel's illustration (Paris: Surugue, c. 1728-30).
4 - The composition has been turned and the format now is vertical, so Schley has enlarged the floor and the ceiling.
