Commentary | Sancho, pointing to don Quixote, introduces him to the Duchess, who rides a white horse and holds a goshawk (accurate to Cervantes' text).
Don Quixote's figure, in the background, is bad. Just one maiden accompanies the Duchess; in other illustrations, her retinue is larger. Since Paris: Surugue, 1723, this gallant scene, with not many changes, is usual in 18th and 19th centuries editions. Engraving of great quality. Drawing with some disproportions (between the Duchess and her horse, for example) and some gestures are artificial (maiden), but good as a whole. |
Notes | 1 - Plate XVI (in the French edition, the plates aren't numbered).
2 - Copied after Coypel's illustration (Paris: Surugue, 1723). 3 - The composition has been turned and the format now is vertical, so Schley has enlarged the trees. 4 - Dated in 1742. |
