Commentary | Well-known scene; resolved with the basic composition. the innkeeper with the book and the sword, don Quixote knelt down, doña Tolosa, doña Molinera and the boy with a candle (accurate to Cervantes' text).
The light and shade effects produced by the candle are quite remarkable; we do not see the candle, hidden by the boy, but we see the light reflected on don Quixote and the innkeeper, who are highlighted. The drawing for the two women is "careless". |
Notes | 1 - Excellent and highly-detailed copy after Gilbert's illustration (London: Charles Daly, 1842 and London: Bohn, 1842). Now, the inking is lighter than in 1842, so the white and black contrasts are not as good as in the original. |
