Commentary | In the center, don Quixote and Sancho according to their canonical image; they appear over a pedestal, where the scene of the scrutiny of don Quixote's library is represented, and surrounded by a frame elaborated with different elements (Dulcinea, almost as a divine vision, damsels, castles, knights, enchanters, dragons, armies...).
In the lower part, Cervantes' portrait, arms, the basin and a sand clock. The frontispiece is in keeping with Romanticism liking for joining reality with don Quixote's fantasies. |
