Commentary | Typified composition in 18th century editions.
In the foreground, Micomicona (Dorotea) kneels down before don Quixote, who tries to prevent her from doing it, while Sancho introduces her to the knight; also the barber disguised with a beard as her squire. In the background, the priest and Cardenio are "hidden". The young man on the right does not appear in Cervantes' text. Don Quixote's arms remain on a tree (reference to his previous penance). Drawing and engraving are quite good. |
Notes | 1 – Copy in reduced format after Hayman’s design for London: Millar, 1755.
2 – Same plate first engraved for London: T. Osborne, 1761 (2nd edition of T. Smollet’s translation). |
