Commentary | In the foreground, two shepherds digging Grisóstomo's grave.
In the background (down), Grisóstomo's corpse surrounded by don Quixote, Sancho, Ambrosio, Vivaldo and shepherds; they all look at Marcela (up). Conventional composition, but Hayman´s drawing makes it unique. Grisóstomo's figure is remarkable; draw as a classical lying Christ (figure of great beauty). Good engraving. |
Notes | 1 – Copy in reduced format after Hayman’s design for London: Millar, 1755.
2 – Same plate first engraved for London: T. Osborne, 1761 (2nd edition of T. Smollet’s translation). |
