Commentary | Accurate to Cervantes' text, on reaching the top of a hill, don Quixote and Sancho see at the foot of it over two hundred men armed with weapons of various sorts (the braying mayors squadron; see their standard in the previous illustration).
Despite the small size of the vignette, the composition has been well-resolved to suggest a large number of figures and two different heights. |
