Commentary | The housekeeper and the niece receive don Quixote, who arrives "enchanted" in a cage on an oxcart.
The faces of the three main characters (housekeeper, niece and don Quixote) are very remarkable. Picturesque setting. Excellent drawing and engraving. |
Notes | 1 - Same illustration and wooden block first used for London: Charles Daly, 1842.
2 - Ashbee reads the engraver's signature as "Blauer", but neither "Blauer" or "Slaver" are known engravers. Other illustration (DQ, Montesinos and Durandarte; f.p. 253, vol. II) is signed by "S. SLV", signature that could refer to the same engraver (Slaver?) of the current illustration. |
