Commentary | Reference to the dialogue between Lotario and Alselmo; Lotario lies to Anselmo telling him that he is trying to "conquer" Camila using the same trick that Devil uses with men; "usando en esto del artificio que el demonio usa cuando quiere engañar a alguno que está puesto en atalaya de mirar por sí: que se transforma en ángel de luz, siéndolo él de tinieblas, y, poniéndole delante apariencias buenas, al cabo descubre quién es y sale con su intención, si a los principios no es descubierto su engaño" (33:1).
Johannot has represented a man holding a knife (with the intention of committing a crime?) and an angel "advising" him (in fact, Devil encouraging the man to commit the crime). |
Notes | 1 - Same illustration and wooden block first used for Paris: Dubochet, 1836-37. |
