Commentary | Example of crude humor.
In the foreground, two maidens beat doña Rodríguez's ass; "que la asían de la garganta con dos manos tan fuertemente, que no la dejaban gañir, y que otra persona con mucha presteza, sin hablar palabra, le alzaba las faldas, y con un al parecer chinela, le comenzó á dar tantos azotes que era una compasión" (48: 2). Meanwhile, in the background, don Quixote is also beaten. In Cervantes' text, these two actions do not happen at the same time, but one after the other. Accurate details (see the fallen and extinguished candle). Poor drawing and engraving. |
