Commentary | The scene is partially original; don Quixote attacks the windmills, half-transformed into giants; precursor of the imaginative, almost dream illustrations of Johannot (Paris: Dubochet, 1836 - 1837) or Doré (Paris: Hachette, 1863), but this image of windmills half-transformed into giants was created by Coypel (Paris: Surugue, 1724).
The drawing is not too much good (see Sancho's clumsy figure); some disproportions help to suggest movement (see Rocinante). |
