| Commentary | The image, included as publisher's emblem, is the XCI taken from Georgette Montenay's Cent Emblemes Chrestiens (c. 1571).
A barefoot and beared venerable man (Moses or saint Paul) stands beside an olive tree from which some branches are falling; also the inscription: "NOLI ALTUM SAPERE", reference to "Noli altum sapere, sed time" (Romans XI:20) (Be not lofty, but fear). The same emblem was used by the Estienne family, printers in Paris. |
