Commentary | Well-known scene.
In the foreground, don Quixote has defeated the Knight of the Mirrors (Sansón Carrasco, fallen on the ground); notice don Quixote's threatening face. In the background, the squire (Tomé Cecial with a big false nose) looks at Sancho, who remains climbed on the tree. Drawing and engraving are acceptable, but with little quality. |
Notes | 1 - Turned copy and with fewer details after Lebarbier's illustration (Paris: Didot-Deterville, 1799); also previously copied by Bigant for Paris: Chez Gide, 1806 and Paris: H. Nicolle, 1809 and by Macret for Paris: Briand, 1810.
2 - Placed in the lower right corner, but it should appear on the left, before "Don Quixote at don Diego's house". 3 - Placed as frontispiece. 4 - Same plate first engraved for Paris: Renouard, 1812. |
