Commentary | During Grisóstomo's burial, the shepherdess, Marcela, appears to defend herself; don Quixote, Sancho, Ambrosio, Vivaldo and other sheperds listen to her.
Hogarth has not placed Marcela at an upper position (as she appears in traditional compositions and accurate to Cervantes' text), but at the same level as the other characters. The engraving has reproduced with great quality Hogarth's drawing skills. Vanderbank's illustration (London: Tonson, 1738) is more accurate to Cervantes' text. |
Notes | 1 - This is one of the 6 illustrations rejected by Carteret and Oldfield. |
